History of
the Parish :
Evangelization started in this region in
1978, when Fr. Joseph Thyil C.M. from
K.C.Pur made contacts and received a few
into Faith in Kalkasol village. As Faith
began to spread in to other villages, a
temporary shed was put up in Kalkasol and
began to be attended from K.C.Pur. On 9th
December 1983, Fr. Paul Kidangan was
appointed pastor of Kalkasol. Residing in
K.C.Pur, he frequently visited and developed
the centre.
In 1985 when he was appointed Parish Priest
of Kusudia, Fr. Joseph Kureekal took charge
of Kalkasol. He too, residing at K.C.Pur,
attended to the spiritual and temporal needs
of the people. In 1987, Fr Zacharias
Kunnamkattuthara succeeded Fr. Kureekal,
with determination he took up residence in
the hut at Kalkasol in the most trying
situations. He was succeeded by Fr. Daniel
Kishor in 1988. He worked for a permanent
residence in Kalkasol. As suitable land was
available in Keutunimari, he purchased land
there and started constructing a modest
Convent for the Sisters. Thus, on 21st
October 1989, the First group of UMI Sisters
arrived and took their residence in
Keutunimari, while Fr. Kishore was still in
his hut at Kalkasol. In 1991, when Fr.
Kishor was transferred to Mitrapur, Kalkasol-
Keutunimari went to the charge of Fr.Gerald
Gomes who was then the Associate Priest at
K.C.Pur. In the meantime, the UMI Sisters
started an informal dispensary at
Keutunimari. The present residence of the
Priests at Keutunimari was completed and
inaugurated on 16th August 1992. On the
following year, Keutunimari Centre was
entrusted to the Jesuits of Jamshedpur
Province and in July 1993. Fr. James Bara SJ
and Bro. Benedict Kichinga took charge of
Keutunimari Centre. In July 1993, the UMI
Sisters started a Rural Hostel for Tribal
Girls all in a very
humble and simple way, accommodating 12
girls in their Convent shelter. On 19th
September 1993, the Karunalaya Health Centre
was blessed opened for the benefit of the
rural poor. In July 1994, Fr. James took
bold step to start a boys hostel,
accommodating 10 little boys in his own
residence. (Keutunimari with its
Sub-stations in a fast growing centre
personed by the Jesuits). Fr. Francis Bodra
Sj. Succeeded Fr. James Bat the Jesuits left
Keutunimari in June 2001 and Fr. Singarai
Tudu who was just ordained then was
appointed to take care of the Station. In
June 2002 however Fr. Joseph Kureekal was
appointed Parish Priest of Keutunimari.
